Addiction Recovery Guide & Resources
Communities for Recovery
Kathryn Gates, LMFT
Kathryn has provided family, couple and individual counseling, worked with clients struggling with eating disorders, food issues, and chemical addictions and their families or partners. She has worked with patients detoxing from chemicals of dependence and those who are medically maintaining recovery from dependence on opiates. Relationally oriented, she has helped clients find relief when the stresses of decisions of loved ones become overwhelming. An individual's problems can not be addressed without also looking at a person's relationships. With a background in kineseology and physical fitness, she brings a systemic focus to the families and individuals in recovery with whom she works, which extends beyond the Family Therapy lens.
Kathryn's therapeutic approach is to provide client-centered support to assist in achieving recovery for the identified patient and his or her loved ones. Thinking from a cognitive behavioral, action-oriented methodology, Kathryn psychoeducates clients on the environmental and relational systems surrounding them. She is consistently commended for her creativity, careful listening, nonjudgmental presence, and sense of humor.
Kathryn serves on the board for the Austin Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and is a Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. Kathryn also co-facilitates spirituality groups with Eric for individuals and families in professional treatment environments.
